History of Bingo
In 1929, a toy salesman, Edwin Lowe watched an intriguing looking game called "Beano" being played at a local carnival in Georgia. Players used dried beans to mark their cards and yelled BEANO! when a line of numbers on their card was full with beans. Lowe took the game back to his friends in New York. Here, while showing them how to play, one of his friends yelled Bingo instead of Beano and history was born. Edwin Lowe was amused and renamed Beano to Bingo. Mr. Lowe worked with Carl Leffler to improve the Bingo game until the 1930’s.

These two gentlemen added many variations to the game making it a more challenging game, with fewer bingo calls, thus the introduction of ‘Bingo Patterns”. This new bingo game grew in popularity so much that soon Edwin was able to ask and receive $1 per year from everyone who wanted to call their games Bingo as well. During the early 1930’s Bingo was a popular fundraising resource for many churches and organizations. Raising money through Bingo while entertaining churchgoers with Bingo Games was then, and still is today quite popular!By the time the 1940's came around, Bingo games were being played all over the country.
